Outrageous! Zara-Jayne Moisey, 25, from Widnes, has spoken about her “nightmare” is facing jail in the Middle East after reporting that two men allegedly attacked her in a hotel, according to the Mirror.

The Detained in Dubai group said the woman was arrested after she claimed she was raped by two British men.

The 25-year-old woman was on holiday in the United Arab Emirates when the alleged attack took place last month, according to “Detained in Dubai,” a UK-based organization that “assists people who have become victims of injustice” in the UAE.

When she reported the rape at a police station, she was allegedly arrested for breaking Emirati laws against extra-marital sex, while her attackers have since flown home to the UK.

The Foreign Office said: “We are supporting a British woman in relation to this case and will remain in contact with her family.”

According to Detained in Dubai, the alleged attackers have had no charges filed against them.Detained in Dubai, an organisation that assists people who have become victims of injustice in the UAE, has warned against reporting rape or other crimes in the country because of the “manipulation when it comes to criminal accusations” and the “racist” preconceptions held against Western tourists… (this sounds controversial a lot!)

It said that woman’s passport was confiscated by authorities before she was released on bail, while her alleged attackers have since flown home to Birmingham, according to The Sun, which reportedly spoke to a family friend of the victim.

However, according to newspaper reports, the two men have also had their passports confiscated.

Upon reporting the rape to local police, the woman was allegedly arrested for breaking Emirati law against extramarital sex, and faces years in prison or severe physical punishment, including flogging and stoning to death, if convicted.

“The UAE has a long history of penalizing rape victims,” says Radha Stirling, founder and director of Detained in Dubai.

“Police regularly fail to differentiate between consensual intercourse and violent rape. Victims go to them expecting justice, and end up being prosecuted,” Stirling added.

“They not only invalidate their victimization, they actually punish them for it.”

“We have been involved with several cases in the past where this has happened, and we work with the lawyers and families and have campaigned to change attitudes in the police and judiciary.

“Recent cases… show that it is still not safe for victims to report these crimes to the police without the risk of suffering a double punishment”.

Her desperate family have now launched an online appeal to raise £25,000 for the legal fees needed to pay for her defence. So far nearly £15,000 has been raised. Zara – has told of her “nightmare” ordeal and admitted she is “petrified” and missing her family according to the Mirror.

Meanwhile a Norwegian woman was sentenced to 16 months in prison after having reported her rape in 2013, and it was only after the Norwegian diplomats intervened that was she able to leave the UAE, once the ruler issued her a pardon.
